Kalicharan Gupta was born in New Delhi in 1947 and has studied at Jamia Millia Islamia & College of Art, New Delhi and Kanpur University. To highlight a select two from his wide array of achievements, he has received a National Award from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, as well as a Junior and Senior Fellowship from the Department of Culture, Government of India.
Through the careful examination of his canvases, we extrapolate that Kalicharan is giving us a visual narrative of tackling issues of the environment. Fine lines, color zones and dark and light tonalities give rise to thoughts of global warming and man’s current impact on planet Earth.
His Celebration series are a depiction of how human beings have been recording their own existence and experiences since the early creation of the cave paintings. Embellished through ritual and passed on through generations, myths and tales have formed beliefs and offered escape from the mundane.
