Sukanta Das’s works are steeped with mysterious symbolism. He has the uncanny ability to juxtapose the mundane with the exotic. It is only in his paintings that one would find a classical Indian figure standing nonchalantly in a balcony.
As the artist says "I prefer to do realistic paintings with presence of some symbols of our everyday life and sometimes they convey a surrealistic environment." His works are without a doubt surreal and otherworldly due to the photorealistic treatment of his subjects and the displacement of the figures in non-conformist settings.
Das won the national award in 1986. The artist lives and works in Kolkata.
